Jewelry Care

Every piece of jewelry tells a story. Learn how to properly take care of your jewelry so it can last for years to come! Our jewelry is handcrafted from talented jewelry artists and we love supporting small local businesses!

General jewelry care practices:

  • Put your jewelry on last after applying your lotions, creams, makeup, perfume, hair products, etc.
  • Remove your jewelry before exercising, washing your hands or showering, removing makeup, etc.
  • Use a polishing cloth if needed - gently buff until any imperfections/marks are no longer visible

Gold: Our gold jewelry is either gold plated, gold filled, or gold vermeil.

Gold vermeil [ver-may]

Gold filled

Gold plated

It is the best option when it comes to gold plating because it involves a thicker layer of gold over sterling silver.

Increasingly popular choice of gold jewelry.  It involves a medium layer of gold over jewelers’ brass or another base metal (typically copper).

Great choice if you’re on a budget but still want that specialness of gold. It involves a thin layer of gold over a non-precious base metal which can be anything from brass to copper to nickel.

  • Refrain from getting your gold jewelry wet (excessive sweat, swimming, showering. Gently wipe dry with clean soft cloth.
  • Always remove your gold jewelry before exercising, washing your hands or showering, and facial cleansing.
  • Apply perfumes, creams and hair care products before wearing your gold pieces.
  • To clean, buff gently with a dry cloth. We recommend using a soft cloth, lens cloth, or any microfiber cloth to gently clean your jewelry.
  • When not worn, store your piece in a safe, dry place to protect it from the elements of daily exposure.

Sterling Silver: 925 Sterling Silver is an alloy (mix) made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (typically copper). It is considered a precious metal.

  • Sterling silver jewelry will oxidize (tarnish) when exposed to the elements (air, humidity, chemicals), so remove your silver jewelry before exercising, washing your hands or showering.
  • Always apply perfumes, lotions, creams and hair care products before wearing your pieces.
  • To clean tarnished sterling silver jewelry, buff gently with a polishing cloth. You can also use a baking soda + water paste to clean and rinse & wipe dry afterwards. We recommend using a soft cloth, lens cloth, or any microfiber cloth to gently clean your jewelry.
  • Store in a safe, dry place when not worn to protect them from the elements of daily exposure

Jewelers’ Brass: Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It has a nice warm, attractive, golden tone that resembles gold. Due to its affordability, workability, durability, and versatility, it’s a great material for jewelry making and is becoming increasingly popular.

  • Brass jewelry will tarnish over time and is visible as a green layer called patina, over your jewelry piece. This is due to the oxidation of copper in the brass.
  • Use a soft brush or cloth when cleaning your brass jewelry, as it can be scratched easily if you use abrasive items.
  • Regularly washing your brass jewelry in warm water and  mild soap will keep it shining. Wipe dry afterwards.
  • Brass is corrosion and rust-resistant. We still recommend to keep it out of water for long periods of time (showering, baths, swimming, etc)
  • Unfortunately, brass is not a non-hypoallergenic metal. It may not be suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Gemstones: We love our gemstone jewelry. From various colours of topazes to moonstones and opals, we’ve got a great selection.

  • To keep gemstones clean and shiny, scrub lightly with a soft-bristled brush, warm water and detergent-free soap.
  • Avoid chemicals or excessive temperatures when cleaning.
  • Store in a safe, dry place when not worn to protect them from the elements of daily exposure.
  • Store individually in a soft cloth or pouch to prevent rubbing/scratching with other pieces of jewelry.

Freshwater pearls: We love the dainty and elegant look of pearl jewelry. Each piece is unique because freshwater pearls come in all shapes and sizes.

  • Avoid direct contact with chemicals found in perfume or other cosmetics.
  • Make sure they are the last thing you put on before going out and the first thing you take off when you come home.
  • Before you store your freshwater pearls, make sure you wipe them with a soft cloth. Do this as soon as you remove them for the day.
  • Store your freshwater pearls individually in a soft cloth or pouch. This prevents them from rubbing against each other or other pieces of jewelry which could scratch your pearls.

Surgical Steel: Typically used to make earring posts. It is hypoallergenic and is generally safe for people with metal allergies. Surgical steel is made to resist rust and discolouration.

  • After a lot of wear, surgical steel can become dulled a bit with residue build-up.
  • Make sure they are the last thing you put on before going out and the first thing you take off when you come home.
  • Use a clean, dry soft cloth to gently wipe away any dirt build-up after every use.
  • To clean dirtier surgical steel jewelry, dip a soft cloth into mild soapy warm water and use it to gently scrub and wash the surgical steel parts of the jewelry.
